Compensatory Draft Picks: NFL Definition
Additional draft picks awarded to teams that lost more or better compensatory free agents than they signed. These picks fall at the end of rounds 3 through 7 and cannot be traded until a player's second year on the new team.
Full Explanation
Compensatory draft picks are extra selections awarded by the NFL to teams that suffered a net loss of qualifying free agents during the previous year's free agency period. The league uses a proprietary formula that considers the salary, playing time, and postseason honors of players lost versus players gained to determine which teams receive compensatory picks and at what draft position.
The picks are distributed at the end of rounds 3 through 7 of the NFL Draft. A team can receive a maximum of four compensatory picks in a single year. The value of the pick corresponds to the value of the player lost -- losing a high-paid starter typically yields a third-round compensatory pick, while losing a lower-tier free agent might result in a sixth or seventh-round pick. The formula nets gains against losses, so a team that both loses and signs expensive free agents may receive fewer or no compensatory picks.
Since 2017, compensatory picks can be traded, but only in the draft for which they are awarded. Prior to that rule change, compensatory picks were non-tradeable. Some teams, notably the Ravens and Patriots, have historically excelled at "gaming" the compensatory pick system by strategically allowing certain free agents to leave while signing players who don't count against the formula (such as players released by their previous teams).
