Unrestricted free agency officially begins each year in mid-March, during what is commonly called the "legal tampering" period and the formal start of the new league year. This is when the biggest free agent signings occur, and teams with significant cap space can reshape their rosters. The first wave of free agency typically sees the largest contracts, with spending tapering off as the market settles.
UFAs represent the most common and impactful type of free agent. Star players hitting unrestricted free agency can command massive contracts through competitive bidding. Teams losing key UFAs may receive compensatory draft picks the following year if their net losses exceed their gains in free agency, providing a secondary incentive to let expensive players walk rather than overpay to retain them.
Saquon Barkley became an unrestricted free agent after the 2023 season when his contract with the Giants expired. With four accrued seasons and no restrictions, he was free to sign with any team and ultimately chose the Eagles on a three-year deal worth $37.75 million.
