Brent Austin 2026 NFL Draft Profile | CB from California

Scouting Report

Brent Austin took a journeyman's path to becoming an NFL Draft prospect, developing through three different programs before emerging as one of the more intriguing slot cornerback options in the 2026 class. The San Bernardino, California native started at James Madison where he played a rotational role before exploding onto the scene at South Florida in 2024. As a full-time starter for the Bulls, he recorded 48 tackles and a team-high 10 pass breakups. Austin then transferred to Cal, citing the program's impressive track record of developing NFL defensive backs-three Cal DBs were drafted in 2025, and nine Golden Bears defensive backs have been selected in the past six years. At 5'11", 180 pounds, Austin is undersized for a boundary corner but possesses the "dog" mentality that scouts covet. His intangibles and football IQ are off the charts-he grades out at 19/20 for intangibles, 18/20 for IQ, and 18/20 for attributes according to scouting evaluations. His production against high-level ACC competition validates his talent despite failing the prototypical 6'0"/200 lb eye test. Austin profiles best as a slot/nickel corner in a man-heavy system where his physicality and instincts can shine. However, his weight is well below the NFL's desired threshold for boundary corners, making him a target for physical X receivers and box-out specialists. He can be washed out by climbing offensive linemen in the run game and needs to add at least 10 pounds of muscle to survive the 17-game NFL grind. His tendency to bite on double moves when trying to break up passes is a concern. Austin projects as a late-round selection with immediate nickel value.
