Scouting Report

Eugene Wilson III is a compact, electric wide receiver who entered Florida as one of the most heralded recruits in the 2023 class, rated a five-star prospect by On3 and ranked as the No. 32 overall player and a top-5 receiver nationally. He carries significant football bloodlines as the son of Eugene Wilson, a two-time Super Bowl champion cornerback with the New England Patriots, and that feel for the game showed up immediately in Gainesville. As a true freshman in 2023, Wilson led the Gators in touchdown receptions (6) while finishing second on the team in both catches (61) and receiving yards (538), earning Freshman All-SEC recognition and announcing himself with an 85-yard touchdown against Samford that was the longest offensive play for Florida since 2017. His sophomore campaign in 2024 was derailed by two minor surgeries involving his hip and knee, limiting him to just two games in which he still posted 27 receptions for 239 yards and a touchdown, a pace that hinted at elite production if healthy. PFF's Trevor Sikkema described Wilson as the ideal chess-piece Z-type move receiver whose springy, natural athleticism allows him to line up in the slot or on the outside with consistent success despite his smaller measurables. What stands out on tape is his hands: per PFF, he has not dropped a single catchable pass across more than 100 career targets, reeling in 95 percent of catchable passes in each of his first two college seasons. His contact balance and body control after the catch were highlighted by Bucs Wire as true differentiators, with 8.7 yards after contact per reception through his first two seasons. NFLDraftBuzz projects Wilson as a multi-role receiver capable of impacting the return game in addition to serving as a slot weapon. He transferred to LSU in January 2026 following the conclusion of his time at Florida, giving him a new platform to rebuild draft stock heading into the 2027 cycle. The primary concern revolves around his durability after missing

Strengths

  • Zero drops on more than 100 career targets, 95% catchable catch rate in each of first two seasons
  • springy athlete with elite short-area burst and sudden acceleration off the line of scrimmage
  • 8.7 yards after contact per reception demonstrating exceptional contact balance and elusiveness
  • twitchy change-of-direction skills creating instant separation in routes through head fakes and foot fire
  • inside-out alignment versatility as a true multi-role receiver in the slot and outside
  • four-down roster value including impact as a return man and gunner given defensive background in high school
  • football IQ and field awareness reflecting natural feel for the game
  • 2.17 yards per route run and 77.2 PFF receiving grade through first two seasons

Weaknesses

  • Undersized frame at 5'10", 194 lbs raises durability concerns against NFL physicality
  • medical red flags after two minor surgeries (hip and knee) limited him to two games in 2024
  • may struggle to defeat physical press coverage without adding functional strength
  • raw aspects of receiver play stemming from limited offensive experience before college (grew up primarily as a defensive back)
  • blocking grade in the 49th percentile, below the standard expected of a complete receiver
  • average depth of target of only 3.6 yards through two seasons, raising questions about route-tree depth
  • small frame limits effectiveness in 50-50 contested situations outside the numbers

NFL Comparison

Jha'Quan Jackson (NFLDraftBuzz similarity comp -- 85% match, similarly undersized slot weapon with elite acceleration and YAC ability); Reggie Roberson Jr. (NFLDraftBuzz similarity comp -- 80% match, comparable frame and big-play vertical threat profile); Jimmy Horn Jr. (NFLDraftBuzz similarity comp -- 80% match, small but explosive slot receiver with return-game value)
