Eric O'Neill 2026 NFL Draft Profile | EDGE from Rutgers
Scouting Report
Eric O'Neill is a journeyman edge defender who took an unconventional path from the FCS level to James Madison to Rutgers. He recorded an impressive 13 sacks in 2024 at James Madison before transferring to Rutgers for his final season. O'Neill's calling card is his exceptional stance and lower-body explosion as he gets extremely low in his three-point stance and generates leverage that belies his smaller frame. His body control and lateral movement are strong allowing him to execute cross-body pass-rush moves that form the foundation of his attack. He has extensive experience lining up from a 4i technique to a 7 technique making him comfortable in multiple defensive fronts. PFF classified him as a 3-4 defensive end noting his pass-rush IQ and scheme versatility. However his physical tools all profile as below-average for the professional level with concerns about his size strength and speed. His below-average length contributes to tackling issues and he lacks the raw power to consistently hold up against NFL offensive linemen in bull-rush situations. As one of the older prospects in the 2026 class his developmental ceiling is limited. NFL Mocks entered the 2025 season with a fifth-round grade on him and he projects as a late Day 3 pick whose intelligence and technique could carve out a depth role.
