Scouting Report

LJ Martin is a 6-foot-2, 225-pound downhill running back from BYU who has established himself as one of the more intriguing power-back prospects in the 2027 class. A four-star recruit out of Canutillo High School in El Paso, Texas, Martin arrived in Provo with over 6,100 career high school rushing yards and grew steadily from a limited true freshman role into the unquestioned feature back for the Cougars. In 2025, he posted 238 carries for 1,299 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns at 5.5 yards per carry while adding 36 receptions for 251 yards in the passing game, earning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year consideration. PFF graded him at approximately 84.0 overall, placing him in the top tier of Big 12 backs, with his yards-after-contact mark (893, 3.75 per attempt, 84th percentile among FBS qualifiers) standing out as a defining trait. Fox Sports draft analyst Rob Rang noted early in the 2025 season that Martin was leading the FBS with 8.9 yards per carry and offered a similar combination of speed, size, and power to BYU predecessors Tyler Allgeier and Jamaal Williams, while acknowledging he lacks the breakaway element of the class's top backs. NFL Draft Buzz rates him as the seventh-best back in the 2027 class with a projected third-round grade and a player rating of 84.0. Martin plays behind his pads with excellent vision and patience in zone and gap schemes, pressing the line of scrimmage before redirecting into daylight, and he consistently falls forward and breaks arm tackles to generate chunk after-contact yards. BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick has praised his development and work ethic, noting his transformation from a skinny freshman to a physically mature, vocal presence in the backfield. His pass protection is regarded as NFL-ready. The main concern surrounding Martin is top-end speed; while he plays fast and gets to second gear quickly, he does not have the elite closing burst to threaten the defense vertically or consistently turn short gains int
