Scouting Report
Mensah is a cerebral, accuracy-first pocket passer who has climbed onto 2027 radars after a meteoric rise from two-star San Luis Obispo recruit to ACC starter. He redshirted at Tulane in 2023, won the job in 2024 and threw for 2,723 yards with a 22:6 TD-to-INT line at 65.9% and a national-third 9.5 yards per attempt among 300-plus-dropback QBs, then transferred to Duke under Manny Diaz and OC Jonny Brewer. ESPN's Jordan Reid praised his balanced, strong base and ball placement; PFF flags him as a high-completion thinker whose touch passing partly compensates for non-elite arm strength. PFN charts a PFSN QBi of 87, 11th nationally, and slots him around No. 130 on its board, while NFL Mock Draft Database has him as a projected first-rounder at consensus No. 22 for 2027. He dissects coverage with his eyes, layers throws up the seam and is genuinely elite in the intermediate zone, where he completed 64% of 10-to-19-yard throws with a 10:1 TD-to-INT mark. His four-touchdown first half against Clemson showcased poise versus pressure and quick, anticipatory decisions. The flip side is a 205-pound frame that triggers durability concerns, a tendency to drift past optimal pocket depth, deep-ball inconsistency and ball-security lapses. Multiple evaluators believe a return for 2027 to add weight and refine downfield accuracy could push a Round 1 grade; as a passer he wins with processing and precision, not arm or athleticism.
Strengths
- Elite accuracy and ball placement to all three levels, completing over 70% at Duke while sustaining nearly nine yards per attempt
- outstanding intermediate passer, 64% on 10-to-19-yard throws with a 10:1 TD-to-INT and 11.5 yards per attempt in that zone
- exceptional ball security with a 23:7 career TD-to-INT mark and cut his pick rate in half from Tulane to Duke
- manipulates man-coverage defenders with his eyes and finds advantageous matchups pre- and post-snap
- keeps eyes downfield and extends plays under duress rather than bailing at first pressure
- natural off-platform and on-the-move thrower who creates outside structure
- quick processor working through progressions in rhythm at roughly 3.2 seconds to throw
- clear year-over-year growth trajectory with a 9.5 YPA Tulane season ranked third nationally
Weaknesses
- Undersized at roughly 205 pounds, raising real durability questions about absorbing NFL contact
- non-elite arm strength that PFF notes makes touch a necessity rather than a luxury
- deep-ball inconsistency, just 20-of-56 beyond 20 yards at Tulane with a 1:1 TD-to-INT
- persistent ball-security issues including seven fumbles at Tulane and a game-sealing strip-sack fumble versus UConn
- drifts backward past optimal pocket depth and shows decision-making and mechanical volatility under pressure
- limited as a runner at about 2.2 yards per carry, so mobility does not offset the lack of bulk
- faded in high-leverage spots late at Tulane, six turnover-worthy plays across the final two games versus Memphis and Army
- still must prove the step up in competition translates against NFL speed and complexity
NFL Comparison
Bo Nix (accuracy and processing carry a non-elite arm, system-fit precision passer); Brock Purdy (slight-framed quick processor who wins with timing, anticipation and ball placement over arm talent); Aidan O'Connell (Brohm-coached, cerebral pocket passer reliant on accuracy and decision-making rather than physical tools)
