Scouting Report

Byrum Brown is a dynamic dual-threat quarterback who built one of the most productive Group of Five resumes in the country at South Florida and now follows coach Alex Golesh to Auburn for 2026, giving NFL evaluators a chance to test his game against SEC defenses. A redshirt junior listed at 6'3" and 231 pounds out of Raleigh, North Carolina, Brown led all FBS quarterbacks with 42 total touchdowns in the 2025 regular season and posted the No. 1 QBR and PFF grade among Group of Five starters while running an offense that averaged 43 points per game. ESPN's Tom Luginbill praises a strong arm paired with an excellent frame and mobility, noting that Brown stays poised, throws from a strong base and keeps his eyes downfield to find receivers late when flushed. The rushing production is no gimmick: he ran for 1,008 yards in 2025 with six 100-yard games and is one of only 11 players in FBS history to post a 3,000-pass, 1,000-rush season, joining Jayden Daniels as the only FBS players to top 3,000 and 800 back in 2023. The questions are mechanical and contextual. He throws with a long, quirky, elongated release that slows his delivery, his touch on short and intermediate throws wavers, ball security has graded poorly, and most of his tape came against AAC defenses. The Auburn season will reveal how his processing holds up against SEC speed. NFL Draft Buzz frames Jalen Hurts as his ceiling archetype.

Strengths

  • Led all FBS quarterbacks with 42 total touchdowns in the 2025 regular season
  • No. 1 QBR and PFF grade among all Group of Five starters in 2025
  • Genuine dual-threat who ran for 1,008 yards with six 100-yard rushing games
  • One of only 11 players in FBS history with a 3,000-pass, 1,000-rush season
  • Strong, compact 231-pound runner who absorbs contact and breaks tackles on designed runs
  • Real arm talent to drive the ball downfield with velocity, deep-ball accuracy graded among the class best
  • Poised under pressure, throws from a strong base and keeps eyes downfield when flushed
  • Four years in Golesh's system gives rare pre-snap comfort

Weaknesses

  • Elongated, quirky throwing motion creates a slow release that NFL windows will punish
  • Feet can go dead on his first read, hurting rhythm and timing
  • Touch on short and intermediate throws is inconsistent within the same drive
  • Ball security is a concern with poor fumble grades throughout college
  • Can lock onto his primary target and be late recognizing pressure
  • Bulk of production came against AAC competition rather than Power Four defenses
  • Missed most of 2024 with a lower leg injury, raising durability questions
