Scouting Report

KJ Bolden has stepped into the role vacated by first-round pick Malaki Starks and looks like the next in Georgia's pipeline of NFL-ready safeties. A consensus five-star recruit out of Buford (GA) and the No. 1 safety in the 2024 class, Bolden flipped from Florida State to Georgia on signing day and immediately contributed as a true freshman. ESPN's Matt Miller calls him a rangy playmaker with elite closing speed and takeaway instincts; PFF ranked him the fifth-best returning safety in the country entering 2026 after his 13 coverage stops tied for fifth nationally at the position. Listed between 6'0" 185 and 6'0" 195, Bolden offers a true three-level chess piece who has lined up at deep free safety, in the box, and over the slot without losing his footing in any role. His range from hash to sideline is the calling card, but he also triggers downhill aggressively in run support and shows fluid hips carrying receivers vertically. Track background (10.76 100-meter dash) shows up on tape as explosive closing burst. Currently mocked in Round 1 of the 2027 class with a consensus board placement in the late teens to mid-20s. The main developmental box to check is functional mass to hold up against NFL tight ends across the middle.

Strengths

  • Elite range and closing speed from deep middle, gets hash-to-sideline without wasted motion
  • Disciplined zone eyes, reads QB shoulders and triggers before ball is out
  • Three-level versatility, has aligned at free safety, in the box, and in the slot at Georgia without dropping off
  • 13 coverage stops in 2025 tied for fifth among all FBS safeties (PFF)
  • Track-level speed (10.76 100m as a HS freshman) shows up as explosive break on the ball
  • Strong tackler for size, drives through contact and wraps in space
  • Ball skills in contested situations, times jumps well and plays through receivers' hands
  • Aggressive downhill trigger in the alley, takes on blockers despite leaner frame

Weaknesses

  • Frame still lean through lower body
  • needs functional weight to handle NFL tight ends in the middle
  • Gets outmuscled at the catch point by bigger receivers in contested coverage
  • Inconsistent angles in space allow YAC when he overruns the ball-carrier
  • Eyes occasionally drift to the QB in man coverage and he loses track of his assignment
  • Tends to give larger cushion than necessary on underneath routes, conceding easy completions
  • Not a factor as a blitzer, lacks the burst or technique to threaten off the edge

NFL Comparison

Malaki Starks (Georgia lineage, three-level versatility, range from deep middle); Jalen Pitre (slot/box convertibility and downhill trigger at sub-200 lbs); Kyle Hamilton-lite (chess-piece deployment, smaller frame version)
