Jaylen McClain won a starting job next to an All-American and did not look out of place. A Rahway, New Jersey product out of Seton Hall Prep, he was a three-year starter, a two-way contributor at safety and receiver, and a track athlete with an 11.06 in the 100 meters. His senior season produced 126 tackles, three fumble recoveries, a blocked punt and a blocked field goal, and he committed to Ohio State over Notre Dame, USC, Oregon and Penn State as a four-star ranked No. 3 in New Jersey. He played 15 games as a true freshman on the 2024 national championship team, logging 110 defensive snaps and more than 200 special teams plays. In 2025 he won the job opposite Caleb Downs and started all 14 games, finishing with 53 tackles, 42 of them solo, three pass deflections and third-team All-Big Ten honors across 708 defensive snaps. The profile is clean: plus timed speed with the range to cover the deep middle, the best tackling mark in his group at only four misses all year, and sticky coverage that held opponents to minimal production. The missing piece is splash. He did not record an interception despite the coverage volume, his takeaway production is light for the grade, and his man reps against NFL-caliber tight ends are still developing. He projects as a rangy, sure-tackling centerfielder whose best football is ahead of him.
