Scouting Report
Zach Lutmer is a small-town Iowa story who turned into the most versatile piece in the Hawkeyes' secondary. He was the Class 2A Player of the Year at Central Lyon in Rock Rapids, a quarterback who set school records for total yards and points and ran for more than 1,600 yards as a sophomore, and he signed with Iowa as a three-star defensive back. He played two games and redshirted in 2023, then appeared in all 13 as a redshirt freshman in 2024 with 14 tackles and an interception. The 2025 season is the one that put him on the board. Lutmer took over the nickel job, started all 13 games and finished with 56 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, three interceptions including a pick-six, six pass breakups and a sack across 725 snaps. His best afternoon came against Minnesota, where he handled coverage, blitz and run duties from an inside alignment and added an interception with three stops. What sells the projection is the breadth of the role: 32 run stops from a defensive back, real disruption as a blitzer, and snaps all over the secondary. The flaw is the finish. He missed 15 tackles and can lunge in space, he gives up catches underneath from off alignment, and speed tests him when he is asked to play outside in man rather than from the slot. He profiles as a starting nickel and sub-package chess piece in a defense that lets him blitz and fit the run.
