Deontae Lawson 2026 NFL Draft Profile | ILB from Alabama

Scouting Report

Deontae Lawson is a highly athletic linebacker who combines movement skills with an ability to read the quarterback's eyes to make plays on the ball in the air. He arrived at Tuscaloosa in 2021 as one of the nation's top linebacker prospects, a consensus four-star recruit with a five-star rating from 247Sports who captained Mobile Christian School to a Class 3A Championship Game appearance in 2019 while collecting 134 tackles and earning Class 3A Lineman of the Year honors. After redshirting his 2021 season, Lawson's development accelerated through 2022 as he gained valuable experience on multiple special teams units while rotating into the linebacker corps. His breakthrough came in 2023 when he seized control of the middle linebacker position, starting 11 games while recording 67 tackles and 5.5 tackles for loss, earning Butkus Award semifinalist recognition despite missing three games with ankle injuries. Lawson's 2024 campaign showcased his continued evolution as he was named a permanent team captain and defensive signal-caller, amassing 76 tackles (including 6.5 for loss) and two sacks in just ten games before suffering a season-ending lower-extremity injury against Oklahoma that required surgery. Rather than entering the 2025 NFL Draft, the Mobile, Alabama native made the pivotal decision to return for his fifth season, entering 2025 as the emotional centerpiece of Alabama's defense under new head coach Kalen DeBoer.
