Slotted Draft Pick Value: NFL Definition
The predetermined contract value assigned to each draft pick position under the rookie wage scale. Each slot has a fixed total value and signing bonus amount that decreases as the pick number increases.
Full Explanation
Slotted draft pick values are the CBA-determined contract amounts assigned to each position in the NFL Draft. Under the rookie wage scale, every pick from 1 through 262 (or however many total picks exist in a given year) has a corresponding total contract value, base salary schedule, and signing bonus allotment. These values are not individually negotiable -- the slot determines the deal.
The slotted values decrease gradually through the draft. The first overall pick's total four-year value might exceed $40 million, while a seventh-round pick's total value might be around $4 million. The signing bonus portion, which is the primary negotiable element, follows the same pattern. First-round picks receive the largest signing bonuses, often exceeding $20 million, while late-round picks may receive bonuses under $200,000.
Slotted values serve as the foundation for draft pick trade negotiations. When teams evaluate trades involving draft picks, they consider both the on-field value of the pick (who they might draft) and the financial value (the cost of the contract at that slot). Moving up in the draft means taking on a larger rookie contract, while trading down results in a cheaper selection. The slotted values are adjusted annually based on the salary cap, rising proportionally as the cap increases each year.
