Vested Veteran: NFL Definition
A player who has accrued four or more credited NFL seasons. Vested veterans bypass the waiver system when released, immediately becoming unrestricted free agents who can sign with any team.
Full Explanation
A vested veteran is an NFL player who has accumulated four or more accrued seasons in the league. An accrued season is earned when a player is on a team's active roster, inactive list, or injured reserve for at least six regular-season games in a given year. Reaching vested veteran status confers several important benefits and distinctions.
The most significant benefit is that vested veterans are exempt from the waiver system during the regular season. When a player with fewer than four accrued seasons is released, they must pass through waivers, giving every other team a chance to claim them (and their contract). Vested veterans skip this process entirely and become unrestricted free agents immediately upon release, allowing them to choose their next team rather than being subject to the waiver priority system.
Vested veteran status also impacts minimum salary levels, as veteran minimum salaries increase with each year of service. Additionally, the veteran salary benefit rule means that when a team signs a veteran to a minimum salary contract, only a portion of that salary counts against the cap (the amount credited to a player with two or fewer accrued seasons), with the league covering the difference. This makes veteran minimum contracts an efficient way to add experienced depth.
