Scouting Report
Christian Gray is a Notre Dame cornerback who entered the 2027 cycle as an experienced, athletic cover man whose draft stock hinges on a healthy, full-time senior season. A St. Louis native out of DeSmet High School, Gray arrived in South Bend as a 4-star recruit (Class of 2023) and worked into the Irish rotation immediately. Sam Teets of Sports Talk has slotted him in the late Day 2 range, ranking him CB at No. 67 to 68 on his 2026 board, while NFL Draft Buzz hands him a 78.0 player grade and lists him among their top corners. NFL Mock Draft Database is more measured, pegging him at consensus No. 210 with a sixth-round projection across 20 mock appearances, most often to Minnesota. NFL Draft Bible's Ric Serritella calls him even more athletic than highly regarded teammate Leonard Moore, noting Notre Dame experimented with kicking Gray inside to nickel during the spring because of the room's depth. On tape Gray shows quick feet and fluid hips to mirror underneath and in the slot against the two-way go, plus the long speed to flip and run vertically. He plays with confident eyes in zone, reads route concepts, and triggers downhill with a strong closing burst, and he is a willing tackler in run support. Evaluators flag a high, sometimes sloppy backpedal that costs him a step in transition, and a 2024 season cut to four games leaves him needing a clean, sustained 2025 to climb.
Strengths
- Quick feet and fluid hips to mirror receivers underneath and in the slot against the two-way go
- Long speed to turn and run with vertical routes from press or off alignment
- Confident zone eyes with strong route recognition and a plus closing burst on the ball
- Ball production early, with an interception and pass breakups as both a freshman and sophomore
- Held an elite passer rating allowed when targeted (47.3 as a freshman, 34.7 as a sophomore per NFL Draft Buzz)
- Scheme versatility, with Notre Dame trying him at outside corner and nickel in spring
- Willing, reliable tackler in run support
- NFL Draft Buzz 78.0 player grade and NFL Draft Bible top-five 2027 CB ranking
Weaknesses
- High, sometimes sloppy backpedal that loses a step in transition and getting on top of the ball
- Adequate rather than elite top-end recovery speed against true NFL burners
- Sparse 2024 sample, only four games and 150 snaps before the season was cut short
- Inconsistent stacking and shedding blocks in run support
- Can be slow to react when a quarterback works back to his side late in the progression
- Career production volume is modest, with only single-digit interceptions and a thin tackle count
NFL Comparison
Roger McCreary (MDD comp, physical mirror-man with strong PBU rate); Nate Wiggins (Notre Dame-style long press corner with takeoff speed); Jarius Monroe (MDD trajectory comp, athletic Day 3 CB)
