Scouting Report

A tall, ball-skilled move tight end who scores.

The case for

  • Prototypical 6-5, 240 pound frame for the position
  • Productive in 2026 with 38 catches, 432 yards and seven touchdowns through seven games
  • Red zone threat who caught four touchdowns in one game at Kansas State

The worry

  • Only one season as the clear lead tight end, so the sample of featured production is short
  • Modest career yardage totals before 2026, with 283 and 344 yards in his first two UTSA seasons
  • Averages 11.4 yards per catch, so he is more of a short and intermediate target than a downfield weapon

Full report

Patrick Overmyer is a 6-5, 240 pound senior tight end at Houston who came over from UTSA after three seasons there, and he is in the middle of his best year. Houston's own site has him at 38 catches for 432 yards and seven touchdowns through seven games, all seven as a starter, which already tops his UTSA totals of 31 catches for 283 yards in 2024 and 27 for 344 in 2025. He was The Athletic's First-team Freshman All-American in 2024, then shared the UTSA tight end room with another talented player who later transferred to Texas A&M, so he never got the full workload until this fall. SI's Houston coverage pegged him as the replacement for Tanner Koziol, who went in the 2026 draft after a First-Team All Big 12 season, and Overmyer has taken the job and run with it. His 2026 usage is steady and spread out: six catches for 84 yards against Oregon State, eight for 83 and four touchdowns at Kansas State, and a 47-yard catch at Georgia Southern. He began as a quarterback at Kingwood Park High School, where he threw for 2,028 yards and 24 touchdowns and rushed for 631 yards and 14 scores, and he also played basketball and baseball, which helps explain the ball skills and movement for a player his size. Preseason All-Big 12 Third Team nods from Athlon Sports and Phil Steele and watch list spots for the John Mackey Award put him on the radar before the season. The STM board has him around No. 141 overall with a fourth-round projection, and Fanspeak lists him as unranked, so the market is still behind the production. No athletic testing numbers were in the sources, so the athletic profile remains unmeasured.

Every strength

  • Caught at least five passes in six of seven games, which shows a steady role in the passing game
  • Can stretch the field with a 47-yard catch at Georgia Southern and a 44-yard touchdown at Kansas State
  • Former high school quarterback with a feel for the game and ball skills
  • Multi-sport background in basketball and baseball
  • Three-year starter-level experience in college football, with a full-time starter's role at Houston

Every weakness

  • Rushing and blocking contributions are not documented in the sources, so run-blocking value is unproven
  • Production dipped to 32 yards on five catches against Oklahoma State
  • No combine or pro day testing available to confirm his athletic traits
  • Currently ranked as a mid-round projection with little national draft coverage so far
  • Missed time in 2023 at UTSA, playing only five games in his first season
