Scouting Report

A slippery, movable slot weapon with rare body control.

The case for

  • Rare athlete for his level, per CBS Sports' Mike Renner, who was floored by his UTRGV tape
  • Body control that makes hard catches look routine
  • Hard to stay with in space, which lets him move around the formation

The worry

  • Small at 5-10, 184, which may limit him on the outside against long, press-heavy corners
  • Most of his production came against FCS competition, so the Big Ten sample is still only five games
  • Only one touchdown in 2026 so far, a big drop from his FCS scoring pace

Full report

Tony Diaz is one of the fastest risers in the 2027 receiver class. He came in as a zero-star recruit from San Marcos, Texas, and broke out at FCS Texas Rio Grande Valley before transferring to Iowa. After a 2024 redshirt, he led the Southland in receiving touchdowns as a 2025 freshman with 875 yards and 11 scores. That season drew AP All-American honorable mention and Southland Freshman of the Year honors, plus a seventh-place finish in Jerry Rice Award voting. CBS Sports' Mike Renner said he found the tape late in the summer and was floored, calling Diaz as gifted an athlete as you rarely see at the FCS level. Renner ranks him ninth in a loaded receiver class with an early Day 2 grade and calls him a movable weapon who is a pain to cover in space. Renner also says what really separates him is body control, which makes the position look easy. 247Sports' HawkeyeInsider listed him near the top of the transfers expected to make an immediate impact in Kirk Ferentz's biggest portal class. He has delivered, starting the first five games and leading Iowa with 25 catches for 306 yards. His best day was an eight-catch, 95-yard game in the 16-13 win over Iowa State, including a 56-yard grab that set up the first touchdown. Renner thinks Diaz has a real chance to be Iowa's first top-100 pick at receiver in nearly 30 years, as long as the Hawkeyes keep featuring him.

Every strength

  • Proven volume, with 17 catches for 172 yards against UIW, the third-most catches in a game in Southland history
  • Scoring touch, with 11 touchdowns as a 2025 freshman, sixth in the FCS, and a score in nine different games
  • Made the jump to the Big Ten right away, leading Iowa in catches and yards through five starts
  • Big-play threat, with a 56-yard catch against Iowa State and four 100-yard games at UTRGV
  • Can be used as a runner, with carries for 10 and 8 yards on jet-style touches

Every weakness

  • His 12.87 yards per catch in 2025 ranked just 180th in the FCS, so he was more of a volume receiver than a deep threat
  • Iowa has rarely featured its receivers, so his draft stock depends on getting enough targets
  • Late-blooming profile (zero-star recruit, redshirt year) means scouts have little film on him

NFL Comps

Scouts say: Jayden Reed, Rashid Shaheed.
