James Thompson Jr is a massive interior defensive lineman who transferred to Illinois from Wisconsin for the 2025 season. At 6-6 and 310 pounds, Thompson brings rare size and length to the defensive tackle position. Originally a three-star recruit from Roger Bacon High School in Cincinnati who signed with the Wisconsin Badgers in the 2020 class, Thompson spent multiple seasons developing before entering the transfer portal and committing to Illinois in December 2024. He was ranked the 87th overall transfer and 12th-ranked DL transfer in the 2025 cycle by 247Sports with a 92 transfer rating. Thompson participated in the East-West Shrine Bowl where he had a stellar week of practice and recorded an unblocked sack early in the first quarter. His combination of height and weight at the interior defensive line position is extremely rare and gives him natural leverage advantages. He was ranked on the sportstalk.substack top 300 big board and invited to the NFL Combine. His upside as a long-armed interior disruptor makes him an intriguing Day 3 prospect.
