Scouting Report

Sahir West is a jumbo defensive end who transferred from James Madison to UCLA for 2026, and he has become one of the more talked-about names among summer scouts. At 6-foot-3 and 279 pounds, he is built like a power end, and he does win with power. CBS Sports' Mike Renner noticed something else on his tape: real bend and agility for his size. A few times every game, West leaves offensive linemen grabbing at air. Renner called him his pick for the biggest breakout prospect of the year. He ranked West fourth in his preseason EDGE rankings, 34th on his overall top 100, and named him the most versatile edge in the class. His early grade is Day 2, as an end who fits both 4-3 and 3-4 fronts. James Madison mostly rushed three men last season, so West got few true pass-rushing chances, and he still had seven sacks. He has quick, heavy hands that help him against the run and the pass. Because he was only a redshirt sophomore, Renner thinks he could grow into more of an interior role in the NFL. Not everyone is that high on him yet. Fan boards called the No. 34 ranking aggressive, and the Fanspeak community board has him much lower. His early 2026 numbers at UCLA are modest, so his draft stock depends on how much he produces as a Power 4 starter this fall.

Holding at #89 since Oct 5

Strengths

  • Rare frame for an edge at 6-3, 279 pounds, so he can hold up against the run
  • Bends and changes direction better than most players his size
  • Quick, violent, powerful hands, his main weapon at the point of attack
  • Several snaps a game where he beats a lineman so cleanly the blocker grabs at air
  • Seven sacks at James Madison in a defense that mostly rushed three and gave him few pure rushing downs
  • Helps against both the run and the pass instead of being a pass-rush specialist
  • Fits both 4-3 and 3-4 fronts, and Renner named him the most versatile edge in the class
  • Still young for the level, so there is room to grow, possibly into an inside role

Weaknesses

  • Small sample of true pass-rush reps because James Madison's scheme mostly rushed three
  • His early 2026 numbers at UCLA are modest (1.0 sack, 4.0 TFL, 14 tackles), so the breakout has not shown up in the box score yet
  • Only one season against Power 4 competition after the transfer, so his tape against top tackles is still thin
  • His size and the talk of moving inside raise questions about his best position in the NFL
  • The crowd is far less sure than Renner: the Fanspeak consensus has him No. 134 overall and 17th among edges
  • Fan boards called his top-35 ranking an aggressive projection based more on traits than on proof
