Malachi Fields is a prototypical X-receiver prospect who transferred from Virginia to Notre Dame and emerged as one of the most intriguing big-receiver prospects in the 2026 class. A former three-star recruit and converted quarterback Fields has an imposing 6-4 218-pound frame that he uses to dominate contested-catch situations through a combination of leaping ability body control and aggressive hands. He attacks the ball at its highest point using his basketball-like frame to box out defenders making him a legitimate red-zone weapon on fade routes and back-shoulder throws. His former quarterback background gives him an advanced understanding of zone coverage concepts allowing him to find soft spots particularly against Cover 2 looks. Fields showed surprising fluidity and YAC ability taking short passes and gaining yards after the catch with quick feet and a tight spin move. PFF's Trevor Sikkema called him the best big receiver at the Senior Bowl where he made a highlight-reel 50-yard diving catch that punctuated a week moving him into the early Day 2 conversation. He is also a plus-level run blocker using his frame and grip strength to maintain control of defenders. However Fields is not a dynamic route runner and lacks the explosive burst to separate consistently in man coverage with a 40th-percentile separation score versus single coverage per PFF. His release at the line is slow against press coverage and his speed is functional but not threatening. Bleacher Report graded him at 7.8 as an overall rank 32 prospect and WR5 in the class comparing him to Brandon Marshall. His career totals across Virginia and Notre Dame include 165 receptions for 2479 yards and 16 touchdowns in 48 games.
