CJ Bailey

CJ Bailey is a 6-6, 213-pound junior at NC State whose physical profile looks like a first-round quarterback the moment he steps off the bus, and the evaluations of him swing wildly from there. Sparkscouting calls him a towering, big-armed creator with one of the highest ceilings in college football and puts a top-10, QB1 grade on him; Sam Teets at Sportstalk gives him a sixth-round grade and argues he is several seasons away from being useful in the NFL; Vikings Wire lands in between with a fourth-round grade and the profile of an old-school pocket passer. What everyone agrees on is the arm. The ball explodes off his hand with velocity, he can reach the far hash on deep fades, and that juice keeps windows outside the numbers open longer than they stay open for the average passer. He is also a genuine mover for his size, a long strider with one-cut ability who can make the first rusher miss, create second-chance offense and work as an RPO threat, and six rushing touchdowns last season surprised evaluators who thought of him as a statue. The disagreement is about what happens between the snap and the throw. Vikings Wire liked his progression work and pocket climb; Teets saw a passer who is slow through his reads, holds the ball, refuses to throw it away and panics under pressure, dropping his head and retreating rather than stepping up. Short-area accuracy is the shared concern, with ball placement drifting behind targets over the middle and a lack of touch on the underneath layers. The frame is extremely lean and needs 10 to 15 pounds, and NC State's conservative, low-ADOT scheme with heavy schemed touches does him no favors as a developmental showcase. He played his best football against ranked Georgia Tech, 340 yards and two touchdowns, and his worst against Notre Dame, where aggression turned into three interceptions.
