Kaelon Black is a compactly built running back from Indiana who emerged as an impactful runner in the Hoosiers' physical offensive system during his best season. At 5-10 and 211 pounds Black runs with a low center of gravity and strong base pressing the line of scrimmage with patience and vision to find open lanes before accelerating through creases. He gets skinny to slip through small holes on the offensive line and earns yards after contact with excellent balance to absorb hits and stay on his feet fighting forward. Black converts speed to power at the point of attack lowering his shoulder to punish defenders and winning nearly every leverage battle with his compact frame. His quick feet and lateral agility allow him to jump cut and exchange gaps when the initial lane is clogged and he is a fearless pass protector who steps up against free runners without hesitation. His leg drive and ability to stay vertical despite contact make him effective between the tackles. However Black has a limited receiving profile as he was rarely deployed as a pass catcher out of the backfield. His shorter build and frame will limit his workload at the NFL level projecting him as a change-of-pace back behind an established starter rather than a feature back. He lacks explosive or dynamic athletic traits and is not known for generating big game-changing plays. His production history has been inconsistent due to a season-ending injury early in his career before transferring from James Madison. Bleacher Report graded him 5.9 ranking him 200th overall and RB15 comparing him to Kyle Monangai.
