STM Take

McCaffrey at STTM #9 tier 3 with the 2025 Comeback Player of the Year award is the cleanest old-back rebound story on the current RB board. Career line reads tier 1, tier 2, tier 1, tier 8 (2024 injury), tier 3 (2025), so the 2024 collapse was games-played, not skill. The 2025 game log clusters between 12 and 35 PPR with no zero-point weeks, exactly the pre-2024 baseline.

McCaffrey was born in Castle Rock, Colorado to former NFL receiver Ed McCaffrey and played at Stanford, where he won the 2015 AP College Football Player of the Year and set the NCAA single-season all-purpose yards record (3,864). Carolina took him eighth overall in 2017, and he was traded to San Francisco in 2022. He has three first-team All-Pro nods (2019, 2023, 2025), four Pro Bowls, the 2023 NFL Offensive Player of the Year, the 2025 Comeback Player of the Year, and is one of only three players ever to record 1,000 rushing and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season (2019).

Strengths

  • Three first-team All-Pro selections including 2025, plus the 2025 Comeback Player of the Year award; the career resume now matches the all-time elite tier.
  • 626 career receptions and 5,390 receiving yards put him in tight-end production territory at the RB position.

Concerns

  • STTM #37 tier 8 in 2024 was a games-played story; the next sustained absence resets the rank quickly.
  • Age 30 with 1,654 career touches; the bell-cow mileage is now firmly on the wrong side of the curve.

What to watch: Whether Kyle Shanahan keeps the touch load under 280 in 2026 to protect against another injury-driven tier collapse.
