STM Take

The career arc is now clearly past peak. From tier 4 (#25) in 2021 and tier 5 (#35) in 2023 with the Patriots to tier 8 (#70) in 2025 with the 49ers shows what the post-ACL recovery looks like. The 2025 game log is mostly sub-6 PPR weeks (Wks 13-18 averaged 3.3 PPR) with a Wk 18 zero. At 30 with Aiyuk and Deebo as the locked alphas, his role is permanent WR4.

Bourne came out of Eastern Washington as an undrafted free agent in 2017 with the 49ers. He spent four seasons in San Francisco as a complementary piece, then signed with New England in 2021 (tier 4 #25, 800 yards). His 2023 tier 5 #35 finish was his career peak, then a torn ACL in October 2023 cost him most of 2023 and disrupted 2024. He returned to the 49ers in 2025 as veteran depth behind Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel, settling into a tier 8 role at age 30.

Strengths

  • Two career top-35 STTM finishes (#25 in 2021 with NE, #35 in 2023 with NE) plus a Super Bowl appearance with the 49ers in 2019 establishes real veteran value.
  • 9-year NFL career from a UDFA pedigree is a rare survival arc that confirms above-average per-target value and pass-protection knowledge.

Concerns

  • Tier 8 #70 in 2025 is the worst finish since 2019 (#82). Career receiving yards have plateaued post-ACL.
  • Two zero-PPR games in the 2025 sample (Wks 13, 18) plus four sub-4 PPR weeks shows what the post-30 floor looks like. Aiyuk and Deebo as locked alphas cap the ceiling.

What to watch: Whether the 49ers retain him through 2026 final cuts or move on for a cheaper younger backup.
