STM Take

Two STTM rankings in seven NFL seasons (#46 in 2021, #66 in 2019) is the profile of a career depth piece. The 2025 Buffalo role behind James Cook and Ray Davis confines him to spot duty, which the game log confirms: sub-4 PPR in most weeks with one 10.2 PPR spike in Wk 15. Age 29 means the trajectory is the bottom of the depth chart, not a path forward.

Johnson came out of Maryland as Detroit's 6th-round pick (186th overall) in 2019. He spent two seasons with the Lions before being released, then signed with the Jets where he posted his career-best 2021 ranking (#46 STTM). He bounced through the Jets, was released, and signed with Buffalo as a depth piece. At 5'10" and 210 pounds with above-average receiving skill, his entire career value has been as a third-down passing back, never a primary early-down option.

Strengths

  • Career receiving production (130+ career catches across 7 seasons) keeps him relevant as a passing-down specialist for any team that needs a known commodity in the role.
  • His pass-protection grades are above-average for a 6th-round depth back, which is the only reason he has held an NFL roster spot for seven years.

Concerns

  • Only two STTM rankings in his career, both tier 8 (#46, #66). That is the production line of a clear depth piece, never a meaningful contributor.
  • Eight straight 2025 games under 11 PPR (with three at 0) shows the bottom of the depth chart in real time. Age 29 means the next stop is likely UFA.

What to watch: Whether Buffalo keeps him through final cuts as a known commodity behind Cook and Davis or moves on for a younger UDFA at minimum salary.
