STM Take

Three straight tier 8 finishes (#31, #43, #57) trending the wrong way is a real arc, not noise. The Wk 16 21.5 PPR shows the burst is intact, but the seven other 2025 games in the synthesis range from 1.1 to 9.7 PPR. He is now clearly second behind Tony Pollard, with concussion history as the consistent injury floor.

Spears came out of Tulane as Tennessee's 3rd-round pick (81st overall) in 2023 after a 1,837-rushing-yard senior season that ended with a Cotton Bowl win over USC. He earned the 2022 American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year award, beating out future 1st-round picks in his recruiting class. His rookie 2023 produced 706 scrimmage yards as Derrick Henry's complement, then 2024 saw a workload increase to STTM #43 alongside Henry's departure. Multiple documented concussions across 2023-2025 have been the consistent overhang on his trajectory.

Strengths

  • 1,837 senior rushing yards at Tulane plus the 2022 AAC Offensive Player of the Year award is a real college production line. Wk 16 2025's 21.5 PPR confirms the burst is still there.
  • Receiving production is above the position baseline; he was a real third-down asset alongside Henry in 2023 and the role still has standalone value.

Concerns

  • Three straight tier 8 finishes (#31, #43, #57) is a monotonic decline, not random variance. The concussion history (multiple across 2023-2025) is the long-term durability question.
  • Tony Pollard's contract through 2026 plus Tennessee's apparent commitment to the rotation caps the ceiling on Spears's workload.

What to watch: Whether the 2026 concussion floor holds and whether his carry share clears 10 per game alongside Pollard.
