STM Take
Career arc has been remarkably non-linear: tier 5-8 finishes through 2024 punctuated by injuries and position changes, then the 2025 jump to tier 2 (#11). The HBCU-to-1st-round profile (1st OT from an FCS program drafted in the 1st round since 2002) is the marker of unusual talent. At 30 with the breakout finally arriving, the 2026 question is whether the tier 2 finish was a one-year confluence or a real new baseline.
Howard came out of Alabama State as Houston's 1st-round pick (23rd overall) in 2019, the rare HBCU-tier prospect taken in the 1st round. He has spent his career bouncing between right tackle and right guard depending on the Texans' offensive line needs each season. Multiple seasons of tier 5-7 (#53, #50, #62, #38) preceded the 2025 breakout: tier 2 #11, his career high. He has been a consistent starter in Houston for seven seasons regardless of which OL position the coaches asked him to play.
Strengths
- 1st-round draft pedigree from Alabama State (rare HBCU 1st-rounder) establishes a real talent profile. 2025 tier 2 (#11) is his career high after seven seasons of inconsistent finishes.
- Position flexibility (RT, RG) gives the Texans roster a structural asset. Career-long Houston tenure means institutional knowledge.
Concerns
- Multiple tier 5-7 finishes pre-2025 (#53, #50, #62, #38) shows the floor when the supporting cast or injury situation is unfavorable.
- At 30 with the breakout finally arriving, the time horizon for sustained tier 2 production is short. C.J. Stroud's pass-protection needs are increasing as he becomes more aggressive.
What to watch: Whether Howard sustains his 2025 pass-block win rate above 90% in 2026, the threshold that confirms the breakout was structural rather than schematic.
