STM Take

The 2025 #31 (tier 8) is the lowest ranking of his career, and the recent stretches have been consistent only in their mediocrity. The 2018 #15 with Philadelphia is gone, and the 2024 sub-4 PPR games confirm the bottom keeps getting lower when defenses prepare. He is what the production says: a journeyman backup with one starter-grade week per season.

Wentz came out of FCS North Dakota State as the #2 overall pick by Philadelphia in 2016, the highest pick ever spent on a Football Championship Subdivision quarterback. He was the MVP frontrunner late in 2017 before a torn ACL in Week 14 handed the keys to Nick Foles, who went on to win Super Bowl LII. He lost his job to Jalen Hurts in 2020, was traded to Indianapolis, then bounced through Washington, the Rams, and Kansas City as a backup before signing with Minnesota in 2025 as J.J. McCarthy's veteran insurance.

Strengths

  • Still capable of starter-grade individual weeks (Wk 4 2025 hit 21.2 PPR). The arm strength that made him an MVP frontrunner in 2017 has not fully disappeared in clean pockets.
  • Six career stops (PHI, IND, WAS, LAR, KC, MIN) makes him a low-friction backup install for any offense. He knows West Coast, RPO-heavy, and Shanahan-tree schemes after a decade of system exposure.

Concerns

  • Tier 8 finish with no positive trajectory. Since the 2019 #15 finish his STTM rank has dropped in every meaningful sample, which means defenses have figured out his decision-making patterns.
  • Two sub-4 PPR games in 2024 (3.92, 0.8) show what an unprepared start looks like at this stage. Injury history (back, ACL, head, ankle) makes him a real-time risk to stay available across a 17-game season.

What to watch: Whether Minnesota retains him through 2026 as McCarthy insurance or releases him before final cuts for cheaper depth.
